(Slinger, WI) After a scheduled week off, racing returns to the Slinger Super Speedway, Sunday evening, May 17. Super late models will headline with the 23rd annual running of the Alan Kulwicki Memorial. They’ll be joined by late models, area sportsman, Slinger bees and figure 8’s as the high banked quarter mile oval begins its evening race tradition after two consecutive afternoon affairs.

The event honors the 1992 NASCAR Cup Champion and former Slinger Super Speedway track champion who perished in a plane crash in 1993. The event carries special meaning and extra pressure for Kulwicki Development driver, and two-time and defending Slinger Super Speedway track champion, Steve Apel.

In its inaugural season, the Kulwicki Driver Development Program is a coast-to-coast driver development program that pits seven of the most talented young drivers against each other in a yearlong chase to be named the Kulwicki Cup winner. Steve Apel is one of the selected seven drivers.

“They want you to promote yourself and the foundation and help keep Alan’s legacy alive,” said Apel. “Carry yourself as he would, represent your sponsors well and do everything you can to help the track out.”

Drivers who were rising young stars at the time have won the Slinger Speedway Kulwicki Memorial, including Matt Kenseth, Andrew Morrissey and Brad Mueller. Veteran champions Lowell Bennett, Conrad Morgan and Al Schill have also scored the win in the Kulwicki Memorial.

Sunday, Apel looks to join both camps as a promising young driver, who happens to be a former track champion, by prevailing in the Kulwicki Memorial. “I put a lot of pressure on myself to win every week,” Apel continues. “I’ve won a lot of races at Slinger, but have yet to win the Kulwicki race.”

In addition to the high-banked quarter mile oval racing action, the evening will feature a roll over contest. Combatants launch off a ramp and attempt to roll over their car as many times as possible. Gates open Sunday evening at 4:45 p.m. with qualifying at 5:00. A 50,000 penny pick-up for kids 11 and under is scheduled for 6:15. Opening ceremonies are set for 6:30 with racing to follow.
