Super late models will headline with the 24th annual running of the Alan Kulwicki Memorial. They’ll be joined by late models, area sportsman, Slinger bees and figure 8’s as the high banked quarter mile oval begins its evening race tradition after opening the 2016 campaign with an afternoon affair.
The event honors the 1992 NASCAR Cup Champion and former Slinger Super Speedway track champion who perished in a plane crash in 1993. Sunday night’s race carries special meaning and extra pressure for Kulwicki Development driver, and Slinger Super Speedway super late model rookie, Alex Prunty.
In its second season, the Kulwicki Driver Development Program is a coast-to-coast driver development showcase that pits seven of the most talented young drivers against each other in a yearlong chase to be named the Kulwicki Cup winner. Prunty, a two-time Slinger late model titlist, is one of the selected seven drivers.
“The board of the Kulwicki program believes in me and they do such a great job of making you believe in yourself,” said Prunty. “Steve (Apel) did such a great job of representing the program last year, here at Slinger. It’s going to be hard to compete with that. But looking back at the history that Alan has at Slinger, it’s an honor to be selected to represent the program.”
Drivers who were rising young stars at the time have won the Slinger Speedway Kulwicki Memorial, including Matt Kenseth, Andrew Morrissey and Brad Mueller. Veteran champions Lowell Bennett, Conrad Morgan and Al Schill have also scored the win in the Kulwicki Memorial. Last year’s Kulwicki Memorial was won by John DeAngelis, Jr, who in 2015 was a Kulwicki Driver Development Program finalist.
Sunday, Prunty looks to prove that he belongs in the driver development program by prevailing in the Kulwicki Memorial.
“It’s going to be tough, because I’m a super late model rookie,” Prunty continues. “But it’s one that I want really, really bad and I’m hoping that the fire is going to be strong enough that it’ll propel me to the win.”
In addition to the high-banked quarter mile oval racing action, the evening will feature a roll over contest. Combatants launch off a ramp and attempt to roll over their car as many times as possible.
Gates open Sunday evening at 4:45 p.m. with qualifying at 5:00. A 50,000 penny pick-up for kids 11 and under is scheduled for 6:15. Opening ceremonies are set for 6:30 with racing to follow.
